WINTER

Winter is a wolf
lean and hungry
prowling, prowling
belly close to the ground
tongue slavering
in anticipation
waiting, waiting.

He swaggers
into unfamiliar territory
loping through
parks and back gardens
in his coat of white,
gazing, gazing
from ice-cold eyes.

He walks alone,
poised, ready
his breath a fog of hate,
searching, searching
for easy prey,
for sleepers on streets,
tents in doorways …..

watching, watching
frosted teeth bared.
